Nipawin Visit Part 2
My barrette-making factory on Mom's table. The girls will remember the lacy barrettes that were 'in' for little girls back then. I sold a bunch on consignment to a shop in Nipawin. It's a bit difficult to see the lacy barrettes on the lace tablecloth...
More letters to Einar:
Wednesday, August 10
We just got back from spending an hour at the fair. It is quite a bit fair but it wasn't that great. Kirsten wanted a merry-go-round ride and cried through the whole ride.
(Note: I remember this so clearly... except I remember it as a high ride, and Mom & I stood on the ground and cried while we watched and tried to console Kirsten, and they wouldn't stop the ride, though I think he did shorten it a bit for us. A bunch of blubbering women probably wasn't good for business.)
Then she didn't want any other rides (even pony) but as soon as I gave our tickets to Dan, she wanted to go in the house of mirrors with me so I had to ask for them back. That she enjoyed... Kirsten wanted to go in a 'ballroom' similar to Ikea's but it was right across from a haunted house with awful noises and none of us wanted to stick around there.
We watched the fireworks though tonite and they were sure nice. The girls enjoyed that! The parade this morning was really nice, too. there were some vintage cars and trucks, quite a few horse teams, a team of oxen, a bagpipe band, besides the regular floats. Some threw candy and balloons so the girls got a bit of candy and a few balloons. One time the candy all landed on the road so Grandpa took the girls to pick it up. He is so proud to be seen with the girls.
Tonight we were at Dan & Norma's with Mom & Dad. Marcia just loves the girls. She'll pick Rachel up - and while Rachel is telling her to put her down - she wants Mommy - Marcia will just carry her outside and play with her. Of course, once Rachel is outside she's fine. She enjoys it. As long as she can see Mommy, she wants Mommy.
Rachel's nighttime prayers are something else! "Thank you God that the sunshine,... Marcia play with me,... Kiki sleep with me" (each ... equals at least one "Thank you God that) "... pretty lights in sky, ... Mommy carry me,... Grandpa carry me,... Grandma carry me, ... something to eat,... I like oranges,... I like apples,... Mommy cut a apples for me,... Daddy cut a apples for me,... Auntie Sue cut a apples for me and for Kiki,........ I think you get the picture - forever and ever Amen.
This is the third night Rachel's gone to bed without a spanking. The secret seems to be to let them stay up so late that she's too tired to get up. The heat helps to tire them out. Sometimes I resent having to spend evenings with the girls, but Mom is right. They'll grow up fast enough. They aren't young very long.
I miss you, Einar. I hope you'll be able to come and get us next Wednesday, Kirsten was so excited when I told her that Daddy would be at the airport to meet us. She'll be glad to get back home. She really misses you.
Sunday, August 14
Yesterday I went with Mom & Dad to Jerry & Lois. The girls had someone to play with so they were very happy. The afternoon passed quickly.
We went to Jerry & Lois's church this morning and I met a few people I know. After church Jerry & Lois, the kids and I came to Winnipeg. We went out for lunch with Eunice & Richard. It ended up being a cheap lunch for me because it was a $4.95 brunch - kids under 10 were $2.95. The waiter looked at the girls for a minute and then said "I'll forget about the kids." So I didn't have to pay for them! We went to Eunice's for a while, and then we went to Old Market Square. Eunice & Richard went to the Planetarium and we went swimming. Jerry & Lois go every Sunday evening in winter. Kirsten, of course, loved it. Rachel didn't even like it when I got her toes wet. But gradually she let me get her a bit wetter. We were there two hours and by the time we left, Rachel was standing on the side and jumping in! I caught her but she got all wet first. She loved it. Both girls cried when we left.
Kirsten was so hyper in the pool. She was blubbering, shivering and giggling all at the same time. She loved it! But she got too much. (Jerry had either one or the other girl most of the time and they loved him.) We went out for supper. I ordered the girls a hot dog and Kirsten complained of a somach ache. I told her to just leave her food then and she fell asleep right there in the booster seat. Jerry took her and held her until we got to Eunice's again. Kiki really misses you, Einar. Jerry was good for her though, cuz he's a lot like you.
I don't seem to have any journal or letter about visiting Dorothy & Isaac in Morden, but we did go there as well, as the pictures indicate. Kathy had a doll that was bigger than Rachel, and it was funny to see Rachel cart it around.
