December 1982

As I look at these pictures, I remember this as one of our toughest Christmases ever - financially. Our pink walls are due to not having money to do the drywalling in our new addition. The addition increased our space by almost doubling it, and gave us our own bedroom. The gifts the girls are opening are all second-hand, except for the Tupperware dish with goodies.
I volunteered that Christmas for our Community Christmas Care as the Food Coordinator. I remember our Pastor's wife suggesting we sign up for Community Christmas Care since she knew we could use it. But I was too proud, or stubborn or something... Einar had had work with Forestry that summer and even an additional 3 weeks of Christmas Tree Patrol that Christmas. Although Forestry didn't pay well, and the work had been sporadic, at least he had work. Many were suffering far more than we were. So after all the hampers were delivered for Community Christmas Care, our Pastor came by with stuff. I don't remember if we got a food hamper, but these toys were 'extra.' They hadn't needed them for the hampers. We also got a gift of money from our Pastor that Christmas. We were both stunned and incredibly blessed. Someone who has never been poor can never understand how blessed one can feel with second-hand toys (which you can tell the girls loved!) and a gift of money from someone who doesn't necessarily have a lot more than you do.
